Because of the wide range of materials to be covered, there is no required book to be purchased.
However, the background of much of the material covered is discussed in the book "Phase Transformations in Metals and Alloys" by D. A. Porter and K. E. Easterling.
A set of overheads is available as files on my web-page: http://www.mse.eng.ohio-state.edu/~fraser/) and references to the literature will be given. These files are used during the course by me, together with some other material provided in various forms of media during the course.

Requirements:
1. Midterm exam (48 minutes):
content: Al alloys
occasion: approximately one week following conclusion of lectures on Al alloys
2. Final exam (48 minutes):
content: Ti alloys, and Ni-based alloys

There is also a freeware non-Adobe application for PC that will also open PDF files. It's called FoxIt and can be downloaded here: (Credit goes to your fellow classmate John Foltz; he introduced me to this program).

Also, remember that on a Mac, the Application Preview can read PDF's as well.
