Vikas’s primary research interests are physical and mechanical metallurgy and materials characterization. He aims to understand the influence of thermal and mechanical treatments on microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-5111 alloy in his current research. This effort involves the extensive usage of optical and electron microscopy methods available within the group.

He also involved in the project aimed at exploring the important microstructural features and mechanisms that determine the fracture toughness in alpha+beta processed alloys using Bayesian neural network and characterization techniques. Feedback from the neural network models is expected to assist in determining the important phases and features, which would direct the experiments. In return, improved comprehension of experimental results would strengthen the models.

Vikas Dixit got his B.Tech. degree in Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering from The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur (http://www.iitk.ac.in). Subsequently, he worked for TATA Steel for close to 2.5 years. He graduated with M.S. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from The University of Missouri – Rolla. His Masters thesis was aimed at experimental optimization of microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir welded Al-2024 alloy. At present, he is pursuing his doctoral studies under the guidance of Prof. Hamish L. Fraser.

“Correlations among process-parameters, microstructure and mechanical properties in friction stir welded 2024 aluminum alloy”: presented at MS&T conference, Pittsburgh (PA) September 2005.

Vikas has passion for sports; he loves to play Racquetball, Badminton, Tennis and Cricket. He is happily married to Manisha, who is also pursuing her doctoral degree in MSE under Dr. Patricia Morris. In spare time, they love driving, watching movies and talking to friends and relatives.
